The Norman J. Warren collection

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Yep, we are finally back in the reviews business.

Although Anchor Bay UK often have a bad time with censors and some rather dodgy prints, when they do a boxset, they can do it very well indeed. The Norman J. Warren collection, released in late 2005, is an example. As well as the four films themselves, the set includes 40 minute documentaries and an interesting commentary track for each film, as well as trailers, image galleries, interviews, a 30 minute autobiographical film by Warren, and even his first cinema production, a 10 minute musical short film.

A fascinating look at the short lived British exploitation cinema era, and a very impressive boxset. Fully reviewed here.

More coming soon…

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

Howdy folks.

Many apologies for the long gap between updates, unfortunately the real world is infringing on my time at the moment. There will be a nice new set of reviews on Sunday, and hopefully more next week.

Just as a bonus for blog readers, our schedule for the next few months has been plotted out. In October we will be going back to Europe for another Spaghetti Western week, a Euro-Crime week and a surprise week when we’ll be reviewing 6 films never covered by English language review sites before. We also hope to have some new preview reviews. In November we will finally go ahead with Dracula: The Movies – a complete look at every DVD out there with Dracula in the title, and more! As for December, we hope to settle down a little for a Cultured Christmas, so we’ll be looking at Bergman, Herzog, and even some Hollywood films. For 2007 we have a very big announcement to come about our biggest project to date, more on that later this year.
Stay in touch, and keep watching the skies…

More from Horror September as we take a first look at the new Optimum UK boxset of the Amicus Dr. Who films due for release
Boxset reviewed.

Mansion of Madness (1973)

Monday, September 11th, 2006

Horror September is back! This time we take a look at the strangest/weirdest/oddest film ever made (I’ve said that a lot, but this one is the strangest of them all!). Released by the always reliable Mondo Macabro with a good print and some interesting features, this is worth checking out for fans of strange cinema: read the review.

More coming this evening.

More Horror next week

Friday, September 8th, 2006

Howdy fans… no updates for a few days, but Horror September will continue in a few days time with more Corman, Price and Poe films. Watch out also an exciting preview review early next week.

Have a great weekend…

Peter Cushing double bill

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006

Horror September continues with some classic Hammer Horror. A double bill of Peter Cushing in the impressive Night Creatures (1962) a.k.a Captain Clegg, a well written smuggling yarn, and the not so well written Brides of Dracula (1960).

Stay tuned for something a little more spicy tomorrow….

Brain Dead (1990)

Monday, September 4th, 2006

More from Horror September. Not to be confused with Peter Jackson’s later gore-fest, Brain Dead is a super little mind-bending horror film with lead performances from Bill Pullman, Bill Paxton and George Kennedy.

Read the review.

Corman, Poe and Price – Midnight movie double bill…

Sunday, September 3rd, 2006

The first reviews of Horror September are now up, and our first look is at the double bill of classic Price/Corman/AIP/Poe unions: House of Usher (1960) and The Pit and the Pendulum (1961) on an impressive Midnight Movies DVD from MGM.
We’ve also got brand new biographies of star Vicent Price and director Roger Corman. Stay tuned for more AIP Horror double-bills all month.

Horror September at Mondo Esoterica

Saturday, September 2nd, 2006

Howdy blog readers. Its September and that can only mean one thing – Horror films (well not really, but I feel like watching a load of horror films, and this is my site!). So stay tuned all month and we’ll be bringing you new reviews of Hammer and Universal horrors plus loads more. Lots of the reviews will be announced on this blog first, so bookmark it today!
September is also a good month for new horror DVDs, with Universal releasing their Boris Karloff and Inner Sanctum collections – we’ll be reviewing them as soon as they arrive so hold on for that. We’ll also be preparing for the myriad of horror DVDs coming out in October.

As for the site, we are going from strength to strength with loads of visitors dropping by every day, plus we’ve managed to get our way onto a variety of popular search engines! Don’t forget to e-mail with any suggestions, complaints or anything else:

Werner Herzog week 2

Friday, September 1st, 2006

Sorry for the very long wait, but part 2 of our Herzog review fest is finally here. We have reviewed all seven films from the Anchor Bay USA Werner Herzog Collection and you can read all of the reviews from the boxset page.

Sadly Grizzly Man (2005) will have to wait until Herzog part 3, watch out for that later this year. September is all about horror here at Mondo Esoterica, so keep your eyes open for more news about that tomorrow.
